Joyful, mournful, thoughtful music for the folks
Kat Wahamaa and Tony Rees, with their eclectic tastes in music, harmonic sensibilities and ability to fashion timeless tunes bring to mind everything from Emmylou & Gram to Gilberto & Jobim to k.d lang to Dave Alvin to Peggy Lee. They have delighted audiences from Ashcroft to Azilda, Kagoshima to Crete.
Their song Warrior of Love, was one of ten chosen from over 3,000 entries from 22 countries for the World Citizen Artists Awards to be showcased at an exhibition at the Belgravia Gallery in London, UK and released on the Playing for Change, Soundcloud compilation. The song appears on their latest CD Everything Blue and was co-written with Kat’s son, hip hop artist, Jesse Warner. Kat & Tony performed at the World Citizen Artists Showcase at Bataclan in Paris on June 21, 2015, as part of La Fête de la Musique, World Music Day across Europe.
Kat Wahamaa has toured internationally; released 6 CD’s and performed her music in theatre and film. A proud Grrrls with Guitars alumna she has been nominated for two West Coast Music Awards and was the first Canadian songwriter to be chosen as a New Folk Finalist at the venerable Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. In 2014 she reprised her role as lead vocalist in Lauri Lyster’s play The Drummer Girl on at The Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver. She is currently Artist in Residence for the City of Maple Ridge.
When he came to Canada, UK born Tony Rees manifested his love of North American folk and roots music, forming the folk infused The Working Stiffs and then blues based Shirley U Jest. In 1997 he joined with Randy Schultz and Dave Clairmont to form Blues Caboose, which performed throughout the south coast of BC, specializing in blues of the 30s and 40s. Tony fronted one of BC’s most popular Western Swing outfits Shiny Buckle Band from 2000 to 2009.
Kat & Tony write and play beautiful music together and are real life partners, too. Everything Blue is their first album of co-writes and delves further into their roots, jazz and blues cupboard. A theme of finding joy in the fundamentals runs through the songs, whether you are down on your luck or surrounded by stuff. Tony and Kat also make up half of the acoustic quartet Back Door Slam and front the blues, Zydeco, southern roots tinged Swamp City.
